The Real Diary of a Real Boy Henry A Shute Books

I've often thought that I was born 100 years too late, I love the apparent simplicity and innocence of the mid- to late-1800s and especially accounts of lives of boys of that era, before all of the political correctness and litigiousness invaded our lives to the Nth degree. Here is a rather short book that tells of a boy's life through his own eyes and experiences. The grammar and spelling are that of an unsophisticated boy, from a "first person" perspective... as opposed to say, Tom Sawyer, where Mark Twain was writing in the third person perspective about a similarly unsophisticated boy.

I first read this book many years ago, probably somewhere in the late 60's, when I was around 10 years old. I subsequently sought out all of the books by this author I could get my hands on, and enjoyed all of them.

My sister recently got a Kindle for me for my birthday, and she knew of my love for this book and so she mentioned that it was available for free download from Amazon, so I downloaded and read it as my first use of the Kindle. I hadn't read it in years, and it was immensely enjoyable to read it once again. As I said, it is relatively short, so if you read at a decent speed it only takes a couple of hours to finish.

If you enjoy books like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, give this a read, I think you'll like it. And be sure to get ahold of "Brite and Fair", another Henry Shute title that is either a prequel or sequel to "The Read Diary of a Real Boy". Oh and also check out "Dandelion Wine" by Ray Bradbury... yes, he is most famous for his Sci Fi writings, but "Dandelion Wine" is in this genre, of a boy's recollection of life in simpler times, although set a bit later (in the 1920s). Finally, be sure to check out the web site of Project Gutenberg, which offers free downloads of thousands of out-of-print books in various e-formats (HTML, epub, Kindle, PDF to name a few)... they have two other H A Shute books available for free (Brite and Fair, and Sequil). At the time of this review, Amazon has both of those as well, Brite and Fair for free download, and Sequil for 99 cents...

The Real Diary of a Real Boy Henry A Shute Books Reviews

Disappointed, I expected it to be more humorous.
I enjoyed reading the book..wish it would've continued longer. The language and spelling made it so very endearing to read.
I owned the hard copy of this book many years ago. I forget where I even got it. This book has stayed in my memory so when I used a for the first time, I was very happy to find it. Thank you for publishing what is an old favorite of mine
The cover is totally different than what is depicted.
The book is fun.
This diary had me giggling. The boy that kept this was very mischievous and playful. My only complaint is that is was not longer. I could have read more, had he kept his diary longer.
Nothing beats an 11yr old boy's honesty and outlook on life! Just wish there had been more. I did wonder if he didn't notice his mother's growing belly. Sometimes I wasn't sure if it was a real diary or if someone just wrote it all. I was glad to read the outcomes of some of the people. It's a fun diary to real aloud to others!
I first read this book as a youngster, found at the bottom of a pile of nondescript books in my Grandmother's closet. The story telling is a bit broken, the spelling atrocious and grammar and usage dangerously bad. It is the absolute funniest thing I have ever read. Young Mr. Shute gives us a glimpse of life in post Civil War New Hampshire form the point of view of a boy in his early teens. It is not politically correct in any way, but is a very accurate and amusing peak into the trails and tribulations of an average youngster of the times. I laughed out loud at something on nearly every page. It's a very quick read because you cant' stop reading it. You can't wait to see what sort of trouble Henry is going to get himself into next. Five stars really isn't enough.
